Orthographic learners first try to read the sentence without using the Monster Mapped® version. If there are any GPCs they aren't sure of, they simply check the Monster Mapped® version. This means they learn new correspondences within a real reading activity and become independent, self-teaching readers because they can figure them out for themselves.
Has your child started learning about letters and sounds through phonics?
Use SpellO Sentences to understand why children love it when we Show the Code. We show how the letters and sounds connect in every word.
Children can INDEPENDENTLY work out the words by using the Monster Mapped® version as and when they need it!
If they can already decode the words, they don't need the Phonemies®! So word mapping support is scaffolded and meets the needs of the individual.
Phonemies® are phonetic symbols for kids that show the speech sound value of graphemes. The Code Mapping® Tool shows which letters form graphemes. When Phonemies® are embedded, they also show the speech sound value represented by each grapheme.
These are the Phonemies® (Speech Sound Monsters®), with their corresponding IPA phonetic symbols and an example word containing each speech sound. The red arrow shows the 'picture of the speech sound' (the Speech Sound Pic) for that sound in the example word. We call these images Visual Prompts.

These are the Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach Core Code graphemes that can be the 'pictures' of the speech sounds each Speech Sound Monster says.
