How Many Sounds?

We count the sounds in words because reading and spelling depend on identifying each distinct speech sound, called a phoneme, so that every sound can be accurately mapped to its written representation.

Use the Code Mapping Tool on SpeedieReadies.com to check the graphemes. We call these Sound Pics, pictures of speech sounds. Use the MyWordz® with MySpeekie® technology to check the phonemes too. We show them using Phonemies.

Learn to use Duck Hands® to segment words into speech sounds.
Put Mapped Words® on the wall so you can see the graphemes and phonemes while using your Duck Hands®.

When speech sounds, spelling, the graphemes, and meaning are made visible together, they bond in the orthographic lexicon. This supports self-teaching and, over time, leads to orthographic mapping, the process by which words are stored in long-term memory for instant recognition during reading and accurate spelling.
