Word Mapping Mastery®
"Show the Spelling Code!"
Exciting News! The Free Early Dyslexia Screening Centre has now opened in Dorset, with more planned nationwide.
Let’s support NeuroReadies: different learning needs different teaching.
We use Monster Mapped Words® and books, because Monster Mapping® makes the connections between speech and print visible and accessible for neurodivergent learners – not just children using phonics within the Speech Sound Pics® (SSP) Approach, a visual and linguistic path to Word Mapping Mastery®.
By supporting the one in four children in England who struggle with synthetic phonics (DfE, 2024), we can help avoid the dyslexia paradox.
“Give me a child before seven and I will make certain they never qualify for a dyslexia diagnosis.”

About Emma Hartnell-Baker aka The Neurodivergent Reading Whisperer®
Emma has over 20 years of experience teaching children and training educators. She has held a wide range of roles, including nursery owner and manager, OFSTED inspector, classroom teacher and school behaviour advisor.
She holds a Level 7 qualification (Masters Degree in Special Educational Needs) and has delivered training for PATOSS and other organisations committed to inclusion, equity and diversity.
In Australia, Emma was known for modelling best practice in schools. Teachers would observe her working with children who were struggling to read and spell, without being told anything about them, so they could see how she identified learning gaps and determined next steps. In most cases, this took less than 20 minutes. Her Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach is being used across all states to teach visual and linguistic phonics as the foundation of word mapping mastery

Current Projects
My mission is to ensure no child is left behind because of the way they process language. I focus on a visible code, because spelling enables self-teaching. It supports easier reading.
Too many fall through the cracks in a system never designed to embrace linguistic and neurodiversity. This same system leaves teachers without the tools they need to reach every learner. We can change this.
Let's screen toddlers for speech, language and communication needs and for dyslexia risk, so that targeted support can begin long before school. We can create a truly inclusive learning environment that supports self-teaching.

What I offer
🔷 Word Mapping Mastery® – A book coming soon that explores why 1 in 4 children do not master single word decoding and encoding, which makes fluency and comprehension harder and puts many off reading for pleasure, even if they can read.

🔡 Speech Sound Play – A ten-day, play-based phonemic awareness mastery plan used before systematic phonics. Ideal for young children, but also powerful for older struggling readers, learners with SLCN, neurodivergent learners and EAL students.
