Speech Sound Mapping: Discovery Learning in Mind
When you show the code, you don't need to 'explicitly teach' the concepts—the 'Code Mapping®' (black/grey to indicate the Sound Pics®/graphemes) plus the Phonemies to show the sound value just make sense to children's brains.
Word Mapping Mastery!
Stan: Self-Teaching for All Neurotypes
After more than ten years supporting school-wide literacy improvement in Australia, including developing word mapping strategies such as Snap and Crack (cracking comprehension), Rapid Writing (sentence construction, grammar, and punctuation), The Speedy Six (spelling words to explore the Universal Code with the Spelling Clouds), Speedy Paired Code Mapping (to improve decoding fluency and encoding skills), and the Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach (to fast-track constrained skills like phonics through explicit instruction using technology and freeing up the teacher), Emma Hartnell-Baker realised that technology can serve as a far better word mapping coach. It can support speech sounds (phonology), spelling (orthography), and meaning, which form the foundation of learning to read and spell.

Emma observed that most children, especially neurodivergent children, can actually reach the self-teaching phase more easily with technology than with traditional human-led instruction. The problem with others who have tried using AI as a reading tutor is that those programming the AI often lack a deep understanding of what children need and how to engage them—something Emma understands profoundly.
With the code mapping tool (to segment graphemes), the Phonemies (to show the sound value), and a series of readers that young children love, the next step is to create the tech. Stan will be the AI reading coder that helps children reach the self-teaching phase effectively.
By meeting the individual needs of learners, this technology will takes significant pressure off teachers, freeing them up to focus on the things AI isn’t as strong at, such as developing relationships, fostering curiosity, and providing personalised support and encouragement.
